New Studio Project Update
Is that the USS Enterprise? The Millennium Falcon? It's the new satellite dish that will capture the programs beamed down to KGOU from NPR and the other networks. The dish was installed on the roof of our future building over the last couple of weeks.

Inside, the rooms are taking shape as new soundproof walls are being constructed, and the new broadcast equipment is being installed. See the progress made on our future space, or take a virtual tour of our current, cramped and crowded facilities.

If all goes well, we'll be moving in the fall. In fact, a couple of movers (a.k.a. Jim Johnson and Kurt Gwartney) have already moved the first piece of furniture out of the old place.

For the 'who, what, when, where and why' of the move and 'how' we'll fund it, visit our Capital Campaign pages. It won't be long now!

Look! We're on TV !
Public television viewers may have noticed a few mentions of KGOU recently.
OETA's Oklahoma News Report featured a story about KGOU's upcoming move into new space on campus. The story aired July 28, and you can watch the video on their website.

KGOU News Director Scott Gurian has also been seen on TV recently, participating in OETA's special coverage of primary elections July 25.
And, OETA devoted a half hour to the issues faced by public broadcasting on Oklahoma Forum July 24. (KGOU airs the audio portion of the program the following Monday at 11 a.m.) General Manager Karen Holp was in on the discussion with host Dick Pryor and other public radio and television managers. You can listen to the program in OETA's audio archives.

Another National Award for KGOU News
KGOU News Director Scott Gurian has won an award in the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors' 2006 Capitolbeat contest. Scott took third place among all radio entries in the In-depth Reporting category for his series on roads and bridges in Oklahoma.

Scott has been busy this campaign season, not only reporting on all the candidates, but also serving as moderator for a couple of debates. He moderated the Oklahoma Democratic Party's forum for candidates for Lt. Governor, and the Cleveland County GOP's debate among the Republican gubernatorial candidates.

KGOU News continues its pre-election coverage with weekly analysis of campaign developments leading up to the August 22 runoffs. If you've missed any of our candidate profiles, you can get up to speed on your own schedule with our archives of Oklahoma In-Depth reports or our longer public affairs program, Oklahoma Voices.

NPR Audience Measures Up
A new report says NPR programming is the fourth most listened to format in radio nationwide. The finding is based on a telephone study of 114,035 adults conducted by The Media Audit in 84 cities between 2005 and early 2006. The report offers a rare glimpse of the power of public broadcasting, since public radio listenership is not usually reported in direct comparison to commercial radio.

And the audience for public radio has been expanding, according to the research. "Listening to public radio has been growing steadily over the past 20 years," stated Bob Jordan, president of The Media Audit. Read the report. Do you fit the mold of the typical public radio listener, or break it?

This I Believe: Magic is Easy, Kindness is Hard
For magician David Copperfield, mind-boggling illusions are easy. Simple kindness, however, is something he has to work at. Listen Monday, August 21 during All Things Considered to hear David Copperfield share his personal beliefs for the ongoing series This I Believe.

On Monday, August 14, a world renowned animal scientist and author who lives with autism presented her essay for This I Believe. Temple Grandin explained how her inability to process abstract thought has driven her to live by concrete rules and to think in pictures and sounds. If you missed it, you can listen online.

Updates from the Middle East
Decades of conflict color today's events in the Middle East. NPR News has insight into the historical context, events, and the peoples of that region in its Middle East Web pages. Find links to stories, as well as additional online-only content, background information and access to free transcripts.

For another perspective, the BBC World Service also has a compilation of news reports on the Middle East conflict on its website.

NPR News Series Looks at Media Influence on Kids
Whether it's macaroni branded with their favorite cartoon characters or websites that display inappropriate content, kids are being exposed to a variety of messages on an increasing number of platforms. What is the impact on toddlers, tweens, and teenagers? And how can parents cope? NPR News aired a series of reports.

Talk of the Nation also explored the topic of 'Tweens' Interaction with the Media' on August 7. Host Lynn Neary and her guests (and callers) looked at the media landscape and how to talk to kids about what they hear in music and see on television and the Internet.

Juan Williams on African-American "Victimhood"
Many African-American leaders have lost touch with a hallmark of the civil rights movement - the tradition of self-empowerment, NPR newsman Juan Williams says in his new book. Instead, they've embraced the notion of "victimhood," according to the senior correspondent.

His book is called Enough: The Phony Leaders, Dead-End Movements, and Culture of Failure That Are Undermining Black America - and What We Can Do About It. Read an exerpt and hear the August 7 extended conversation between Williams and Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep on NPR.org.

Williams was also a guest on The Diane Rehm Show August 8, talking about the same topic. Listen from the program archive page.
