| Oklahoma Voices: State of the Schools August 30, 2010 MP3 MP3 (part 2) Over the next several weeks, KGOU's Oklahoma Voices will focus on education. In this episode, we hear presentations recorded at the recent Oklahoma City Chamber's State of the Schools event. Ken Levit, executive director of the George Kaiser Family Foundation in Tulsa, and Brian Fitzgerald, director the Business-Higher Education Forum are the featured speakers. Please let KGOU know what you think of this and our other public affairs programs. Next week, we present an audio re-broadcast of an OETA Oklahoma Forum program on State Question 744, which would require increased funding for the state's public schools.
| World Views: Foreign Policy in Midterm Elections, Blogger and UM Professor Juan Cole Aug. 16, 2010 MP3 The 2010 midterm elections are now underway in the U.S., but unlike previous elections in 2004, 2006, and 2008, foreign policy is not expected to be a deciding issue when voters choose their elected officials. World Views host Zach Messitte attributes this drop off to both domestic issues with the economy and healthcare, as well as a lack of US foreign policy success. Joshua Landis examines President Obama's speech in Cairo one year later, and the aftermath of Obama's message of mutual respect. Mike Boettcher discusses a new project he launches next month in conjunction with ABC News and the University of Oklahoma. And University of Michigan History Professor Juan Cole talks about his book Engaging the Muslim World. Since 2002, he's written the award-winning blog Informed Comment.
| Oklahoma Voices: Young Chickasaw Composers release CD Aug. 16, 2010 MP3 On Oklahoma Voices, host Susan Shannon interviews Jarod Impichchaachaaha Tate, composer-in-residence for the Chickasaw Nation along with two of his students, Amanda Shackelford and Cruise Berry. Shackelford and Berry, along with 9 other young Chickasaw composers, released a CD of their original compositions, the CD’s name is “Oshtali”, a Chickasaw word that means to divide into 4 parts. Which is very apropos because their classical compositions were performed by the string quartet ETHEL. ETHEL is comprised of Julliard trained performers: Cornelius Dufallo, Ralph Farris, Dorothy Lawson and Mary Rowell
| Oklahoma Voices: State Budget Crisis with David Blatt August 9, 2010 MP3 The Oklahoma Policy Institute's David Blatt says continuing to cut budgets is not the answer to helping with the state's budget crisis. KGOU recorded a presentation Blatt made at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on July 8. Special thanks to KGOU Chief Engineer Patrick Roberts for recording the event, and to practicum student Annie Chang for editing the program. Email us and let us know what you think about this and our other public affairs programs.
| OK Voices: Candidates Speak on Children's Issues Oct. 19, 2009 MP3 Oklahoma voters have another nine months before they can cast their first ballots in the race for Governor Brad Henry's replacement. But the two Democratic candidates, Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins and Attorney General Drew Edmondson, have already faced off, presenting their views on the future health and well being of Oklahoma's children at the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy's fall legislative forum. Republican gubernatorial candidates U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin and State Senator Randy Brogdon were also invited, but unable to attend last week's event. Alex Cameron, director of Statewide Special Content Projects for Griffin Communications and leader of the Oklahoma Impact Team, served as moderator. Special thanks to the audio/visual department at the University of Central Oklahoma for recording assistance.
