The Freeing of Curtis Edward McCarty
Monday, May 21, 2007

Twenty-one years ago, Curtis Edward McCarty was sentenced to death for the 1982 killing of Pamela Kaye Willis. Earlier this month, an Oklahoma District Court Judge decided to free McCarty after ruling that his case had been tainted by the misconduct of former Oklahoma City police chemist Joyce Gilchrist. McCarty’s parents Shirley and Joe McCarty and his lead attorney Perry Hudson spoke to reporters at the capitol on Friday about their son’s case and about the dangers of wrongful convictions. Hudson claimed that Gilchrist maliciously lost or destroyed key evidence in the case, and he added that he believes higher-ranking officials in the police department must also have known what was going on. We listen to an excerpt of the press conference.
