An important figure in the American shale boom has died in a car crash, a day after being indicted. At a news conference this afternoon, Oklahoma City police said Aubrey McClendon, the former head of Chesapeake Energy was killed in a one-car crash.
McClendon’s 2013 Chevy Tahoe was apparently going faster than the 40-mile-per-hour speed limit when it hit a stone bridge around 9 a.m. Central time. He was alone in the car and no other vehicles were involved.
The accident this morning came after the Justice Department announced yesterday that it had charged McClendon with conspiring with his rivals to keep the price of oil and natural gas leases low. It’s part of a larger investigation into price fixing in the oil and gas industry.
