Oklahoma Engaged: A Preview Of Capitol Hill

For weeks now, KGOU and KOSU have been unveiling stories on voter participation and the Oklahoma ballot in advance of the November 8 election.

The collaborative project, Oklahoma Engaged, examines and explains ballot measures and key political races with an emphasis on voter apathy, changing demographics and other factors impacting voter turnout.

“Through hyperlocal reporting that includes compelling audio and visual storytelling, Oklahoma Engaged aims to broaden our overall understanding of the entire process at hand,” said Jim Johnson, KGOU's program director.

Oklahoma had one of the lowest voter turnouts of any state in the 2012 presidential election, while only about a third of the state's registered voters cast ballots in the 2014 gubernatorial race, the lowest turnout in more than 50 years.

“With seven ballot questions and a host of political races, there is an incredible amount of information for Oklahomans to digest before the November election,” said Rachel Hubbard, KOSU's associate director. “Through our collective efforts, we are creating a comprehensive resource to help Oklahoma voters make informed decisions while encouraging non-voters to learn more about the voting process.”

We'll have many more stories in the coming weeks, as well as several more videos that help tell the stories of Oklahoma voters.

Oklahoma Engaged is a collaborative series between KGOU and KOSU, with support from the Kirkpatrick Foundation.
