An Oklahoma judge has ruled that the Humane Society of the United States must turn over one contested document and portions of two others to the attorney general's office, but can keep 21 others secret.
The Oklahoman reports that Oklahoma County District Judge Patricia Parrish ruled that the Humane Society can withhold the documents after the organization sued state Attorney General Scott Pruitt to block their release.
Pruitt has been gathering documents to determine whether the organization used misleading solicitations to convince Oklahomans that a majority of their donations would go to local animal shelters.
Prosecutors allege that a majority of the funds were being used for lobbying and special interest campaigns.
Drew Edmonson, who represents the Humane Society, said the organization has not tried to hide that its efforts go beyond local shelters.
