U.S. Senator James Lankford probably won’t vote in favor of the confirmation of Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch.
The Republican from Oklahoma lauded Lynch’s work as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, but her statements on immigration have raised some concerns for him.
“She believes some of the President’s executive actions are fully legal and constitutional,” Lankford said. “A court has already said that is not correct and the way they did it was not correct. So we have a conflict happening here between the courts and the potential chief legal advisor to the President.”
President Obama nominated Lynch last November. If confirmed, she will replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder.
Lankford said her confirmation has taken so long because the President nominated her during the lame duck session.
“I know there’s been a lot of spin to say it’s been 17 weeks, it’s been such a long time, but when he released that name at the end of last year he knew no one was going to move on it,” Lankford said. “The previous judiciary chairman, who was a Democrat, said at the end that he was not even going move it during the last session of Congress.”
The Senate is expected to take up Lynch’s confirmation next week.
