Oklahomans will see an average fee increase of about 30 cents on their phone bills to help pay for internet services in schools, libraries and hospitals.
The state's Corporation Commission approved the increase Thursday for the Oklahoma Universal Service Fund.
The Oklahoman reports phone companies pay the fees, but the fees are passed onto customers in their bills.
Commissions complained that the increase in fees was a result of the expansion of the program by the legislature and that possible overuse of internet services were driving up costs.
Reports from late 2011 show that the largest increase in reimbursements came from telemedicine where the ability to do more testing and consultation via the internet expanded.
