In California, 55 people have died due to coronavirus. There are 2,600 confirmed cases. And Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said worse is coming.

“All of us want things to go back to the normal, all of us, but the premature pronouncements that we can see that light at the end of the tunnel — I would say we are just entering that tunnel right now.”

As California scrambles to avoid New York-levels of infection, Congress continues to try to avoid an economic crash.

Last night, the Senate passed a $2 trillion economic stimulus deal that would provide cash payments to Americans, help small businesses and send more resources to state and local governments and hospitals. The bill now moves to the House. Lawmakers there have said they’d like to work quickly to pass it.

Democratic Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D., was an emergency room physician before he represented California’s 36th congressional district.

He joins us to discuss California’s fight against COVID-19 and the federal government’s attempt to block an economic recession.
