India, the second most populous country in the world is on lockdown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision comes after the country reported 606 cases of coronavirus. While the order aims to prevent a massive public health disaster, experts say it could leave the economy reeling and its citizens starving.

And Europe is now the epicenter of COVID-19. In Spain, the number of deaths from coronavirus has surpassed those in China. In the U.K., Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued a stay-at-home order to all citizens.

But in Germany, testing widely for coronavirus seems to be paying off. The country has the lowest death rate from the disease in the world.

In Russia, President Vladimir Putin has ordered all citizens to take a week off from work in order to stop the spread of the virus. The order comes alongside the postponement of a referendum that would have extended his term in office.

We’ll cover this week’s biggest stories from around the world on the News Roundup.
