A group of legislators and advocates for improving Oklahoma nursing homes are criticizing House Speaker T.W. Shannon's decision to reject an interim legislative study to explore the issue.
Oklahoma City Democratic Rep. Richard Morrissette on Wednesday cited a recent study by a Florida-based nursing home resident advocacy group that gave Oklahoma an "F'' grade and ranked the state 48th in nursing home care. The report byFamilies for Better Care ranked Oklahoma last among all states in the amount of professional nursing care the average resident gets each day, with less than 29 minutes.
Morrissette says the report shows the desperate need for legislation to ensure the safety of nursing home residents in Oklahoma.
A spokesman for Shannon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
