Oklahoma Treasurer Ken Miller talks to reporters in Oklahoma City, Wednesday, July 6, 2016. Miller said Oklahoma is muddling through a continued economic downturn.

Oil and natural gas production tax collections increased slightly over the past two months, although they're still well below this time last year.

Gross receipts for the month of June were $925.7 million, or 7.4 percent lower than the June 2015 total.

State Treasurer Ken Miller said Wednesday data released in June show Oklahoma entered a recession in the spring of 2015.

“There's nothing to show marked improvement or a recovery in the energy sector, which means the state's going to continue to have its budget problems in the near term,” Miller told reporters. “But hopefully the numbers show moderation and the worst is behind us."

Miller said it's too early to try to predict next year's budget gap. Oklahoma's monthly unemployment rate rose in May to match the federal rate at 4.7 percent.

"This is the first time both numbers have been the same since September 2003, so it's been a pretty good run where we've been below the national average, and that has come to an end as well,” Miller said.

The treasurer's report says one June survey of supply managers suggested a worse economic outlook over the next three to six months than was estimated in May.
