Oklahoma could be in store for a light round of winter weather over the weekend.
The National Weather Service says starting late Friday night rain and snow could start to develop over western Oklahoma and move east into central and southern parts of the state. Norman Forecast Office senior forecaster Michael Scotten says precipitation chances will increase mainly after midnight.
“Heavy snowfall appears unlikely at this time,” Scotten said. “However, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect between midnight tonight and noon Saturday for parts of western Oklahoma.”
Lows will fall to right around freezing in central Oklahoma overnight between Friday and Saturday, which will affect the type and location of wintry precipitation. A trace to up to an inch of snow could fall in the metro; further west, anywhere from 1-2 inches are possible, with up to three inches in isolated locations.
“A brief period of sleet may occur as any rain changes over to snow. Freezing rain is not expected with this system,” Scotten said. “A strong cold front and another weak low pressure disturbance may bring additional chances for light snow Sunday and Sunday night.”
