Students Gain Hands-On Experience at KGOU

This is the Manager’s Minute.

A new semester means new students at KGOU. This semester, we have five students with us from the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Lauren Owen and Gabriel Castillo are taking the Practicum course.  Lauren will be working primarily in news; Gabriel will be doing audio production. In his Independent Study program, Ricky Tippett will be learning radio from both the editorial and management sides of KGOU.

We also have two part-time student employees who will be doing news reporting, hosting and producing community events calendars: Taitum Wilson and Katelyn Howard.

Some of KGOU’s top employees over the years have started as students. Richard Bassett was community calendar producer for three years before going full-time as All Things Considered host last fall.

We welcome our students to this unique learning experience KGOU has provided for more than thirty years.

Until next time, with the Manager’s Minute, I’m Dick Pryor.

Dick Pryor has more than 30 years of experience in public service media, having previously served as deputy director, managing editor, news manager, news anchor and host for OETA, Oklahoma’s statewide public TV network. He was named general manager of KGOU Radio in November 2016.
