Yom HaShoah 2023 Holocaust Remembrance Day - Besa: The Albanian Honor Code that Saved the Jews
Yom HaShoah 2023 Holocaust Remembrance Day - Besa: The Albanian Honor Code that Saved the Jews
This year's Holocaust Remembrance Program organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City will tell the heroic story of Albania, a predominantly Muslim country. They ended the war with a larger population of Jews than what they started with.
Albanians live by an honor code called Besa, meaning "to keep the promise" or "word of honor." During the war, Albanians took in refugees - gave them clothes, Albanian names, and treated them like family.
