An Oklahoma House committee has approved legislation to require the state Board of Health to establish standards for abortion providers and clinics, including standards for equipment and supplies that might be needed in a medical emergency.

The House Public Health Committee approved the Senate-passed measure by a 7-4 vote Tuesday and sent it to the full House for a vote.

Republican Rep. Randy Grau of Edmond says abortion clinics need to be closely regulated and standards need to be set. But Republican Rep. Doug Cox — who is a doctor — says standards for the practice of medicine are already established by a variety of medical organizations.

Cox says members of the Board of Health include non-physicians who are not familiar with appropriate standards.
