On this week’s OneSix8, I bring you a summer jazz festival, a Shakespearian play set in Vienna, Virginia in 1969, and a panel discussion with an award-winning author and photographer. Let’s get started.
When Jazz in June first started in 1984, it drew 300 people. Thirty years later, the annual festival plans to attract over 50,000 people. Jazz enthusiasts can hear musicians like Oklahoma native Parker Millsap as well as renowned guitarist Duke Robillard June 20 – 22 at Andrews Park, Brookhaven Village, and the Performing Arts Studio in Norman.
For its 30th birthday, the festival brings headliners like Fareed Haque & MathGames! and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band from New Orleans. Clinics with the artists and post-concert jazz and blue jam sessions provide an opportunity to hear the musicians talk about their craft and see them perform in more intimate settings. Shakespeare in the Park has returned to the Myriad Botanical Gardens Water Stage again this year. And if you want to catch one of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies that has been transformed into an Americanized “make love, not war” play, this weekend marks your last chance.
“Measure for Measure” features an abstract yet charming take on the lesser-known piece Shakespeare wrote in the early 17th century. Isabella struggles to decide where her loyalty lies Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m.
Full Circle Bookstore offers a panel discussion in response to the popularity of Yousef Khanfar’s Invisible Eve project. Khanfar spent four years photographing women who were incarcerated for non-violent crimes in Oklahoma. The unmitigated black-and-white portraits are accompanied by each woman’s insight and advice to future generations. This Saturday at 2:00 p.m., Wanda Pratt (proud mother of Anthony and Kevin Durant) leads a discussion with Khanfar about his experience with the project. A book signing opportunity follows.
