Entertaining The Hours Of Your Week: Homegrown Heroes

Carpenter Square Theatre

There’s no place like home for the events featured on this week’s OneSix8.

Carpenter Square Theatre’s rendition of “Out ofSterno” closes this weekend. Deborah Zoe Laufer’s wacky comedy follows the extremely likable Dotty who lives in the town of Sterno. And when I say she lives there, I mean she never leaves.

Dotty's husband has forbidden her to leave the house. She spends her days watching and re-watching a videotape of her first meeting with her husband. She cleans, cooks, and waits for her less-than-faithful man to come home each night.

One day, Dotty receives a bizarre phone call that draws her out of her tiny apartment. What follows is an endearing and zany coming-of-age story as the heroine discovers what it means to be a real woman. Performances are Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00.

Another girl who ventures out of her hometown comes to Oklahoma City University’s campus this week in honor of the Children’s Theatre Festival. Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Old MacDonald, and Rumpelstiltskin all make multiple appearances during this five-day marathon where kids can escape to other worlds.

Shows continue through Sunday, and times vary based on the day. A complete listing of the times and specific locations can be found here.

And residents in Stratford, Oklahoma, are gearing up for Saturday’s Peach Festival. Billed as the Peach Capitol of Oklahoma, the city offers visitors the opportunity to taste ice cream, tea, and other foods inspired by the fuzzy fruit each year during this annual event.

The day kicks off at 6:30 a.m. with a 5K and 1 mile fun run (7:00 a.m. start) in the city’s park.  If you aren’t an early bird though, no worries. The festival’s welcome activities officially start at 9:00 a.m. A classic car show, live music by Overdrive, and children’s games continue throughout the day.
