Big names fill this week’s OneSix8. From a renowned Broadway show to some of Oklahoma’s own, entertainment this week is sure to have something for everyone.
Characters from The Land of Oz have arrived at The Civic Center Music Hall. The popular Broadway musical “Wicked” returns to Oklahoma City this month for the 2013-2014 Celebrity Attraction season.
Witches Glinda and Elphaba share the stage and give the audience a peek into life before Dorothy left Kansas for Oz in this three-time Tony Award-winning show. Though the story is based off Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, the musical “Wicked” brings an incredible score and jaw-dropping costumes that transport spectators into a land of munchkins, witches and winged monkeys. You can catch “Wicked” and see Elphaba’s transformation through September 22.
Another Broadway star also stops by the Sooner State this week. Dancer and choreographer Savion Glover performs "SoLo in Time" September 6 at The University of Central Oklahoma’sMitchell Hall Theatre.
The tap dancer made his way onto the Broadway stage at the age of 12 when he performed in “The Tap Dance Kid.” Glover then won a Tony Award for his choreography Broadway show “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk” only 11 years later. His “free-form hard core” style of tap has led to a renewed sense of what tap can be for younger artists. Glover pays homage to the history of tap and art as part of UCO's Broadway Tonight series this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
And Oklahoma’s first family rolls out the red carpet for Septemberfest this Saturday. Governor Mary Fallin and her team host the 17th annual family fair where residents can celebrate Oklahoma with carriage rides, storytelling and countless children’s activities at the Governor’s Mansion.
The Oklahoma History Center also offers living history performances and outdoor exhibits portraying the rich history of the state. This year’s event also includes an outdoor music venue featuring local high school bands and performers. Septemberfest activities take place from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
There are several more entertainment options taking place over the next 168 hours.
Claremore’s 34th annual Bluegrass and Chili Festival returns to the city’s Expo Center September 5 – 7. In addition to music and a chili cook-off, attendees can shop at the festival market and enjoy three stages of live entertainment.
[Artspace] at Untitled offers a sneak peak of its January installation September 7. The Untitled Car Show allows guests an opportunity to speak with vintage car collectors and admirers.
Downtown Oklahoma City hosts its first Rock the Boat festival Sunday, September 8. The half-day festival occurs on the Bricktown Canal and features live music on water taxis, a photo booth and magic shows.
