Convention of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia
Descendants and researchers of Germans from Russia are poised to enrich their understanding and forge new connections at the 54th Annual American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) Convention, set to take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from August 7th to 9th, 2024.
The convention promises a rich tapestry of insights with a lineup of distinguished speakers, commencing with keynote speaker Dr. Michael Brown's captivating discourse on The Beet Master: A History of Mechanized Sugar Beet Harvesting. Culminating the event is the enlightening banquet address by Dr. Brent Mai titled Back to the Future: Why Looking Back Is So Critical to the Future. In between, attendees can expect a diverse array of sessions spanning topics from Volhynia to the Black Sea, and from Mennonite to Volga settlements.
AHSGR President Bob Ahlbrandt shared, "The theme of the 2024 Convention, 'From the Steppes to our Tables,' underscores the pivotal role Germans from Russia immigrants played in shaping the Oklahoma Frontier. Their agricultural expertise transformed Oklahoma into a cornerstone of American agriculture."
Convention chair Duane Stabler added, "Hosted by the North Texas and Central Oklahoma chapters, this year's convention spotlights our agricultural heritage. The chosen flyer image, depicting workers in the fields of Bessarabia, resonates with the challenges and triumphs experienced by early settlers across the Great Plains."
Highlighted sessions include Mervin Weiss's exploration of The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, Dr. Eric Schmaltz's discussion on Germans from Russia Settlements in Oklahoma and Texas (1880s-1920s), Dr. Erika Weidemann’s Mennonites on the Move, Wayne Garman’s War and German Immigration, and Russ Gunther's investigation into Scout Explorer Voyages to Americas. Additionally, a panel discussion led by Mike Meisinger will delve into the shared heritage of Germans from the Russian Empire.
Ahlbrandt emphasized the significance of the convention, stating, "After the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the value of face-to-face interactions has never been clearer. We urge all interested parties, especially those within a day's drive of Oklahoma City, to join us for this enriching experience."
Complementing the convention's intellectual offerings, attendees will have the opportunity to connect during the revamped Village Gathering experience and Welcome Night, fostering camaraderie and shared exploration of familial roots.
