OKC Philharmonic’s Discovery Family Series Returns
OKC Philharmonic’s Discovery Family Series Returns
The Oklahoma City Philharmonic is set to kick off its 36th season with the return of the Discovery
Family Series. The first of three performances, titled “The Conductor’s Spellbook,” will take place on Sunday
September 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Music Hall.
“The Conductor’s Spellbook” composed by Paul Dooley is the story of an imaginary adventure about a young
boy, Tony Stradivarius. Tony and his class attend a concert performed by an orchestra. After the concert, the
class returns to school, but Tony sneaks away and hides backstage until all the students and musicians have left.
Tony thinks he is alone, but soon discovers the instruments left on stage… Tony wonders if he can make the
instruments come to life, and finds a large book on the conductor’s podium titled, “The Conductor’s Spellbook.”
As Tony flips through the pages, and experiments with the imaginary musical spells, he discovers that he can
make the instruments come to life! Come enjoy this whimsical tale of a young boy’s imaginary experience on the
stage!
Don’t miss the pre-concert activities that begin at 1:00 p.m., just an hour before the concert. Art projects, crafts,
and instruments to experiment with are all waiting for you.
Associate Conductor Dr. Shanti Simon is excited to lead the Discovery Family Series again this year, building
upon the interactive and engaging nature of the Discovery concerts. These performances, along with the pre-
concert activities are designed to create a welcoming and exciting environment for children, allowing them to
experience the grandeur of the Philharmonic in a way that encourages curiosity, movement, and joy.
