Oklahoma State University is one of 55 schools being investigated by the federal Education Department over their handling of sexual abuse complaints.

The schools are being investigated under Title IX, which prohibits gender discrimination but has been increasingly used by victims who say their schools failed to protect them. Federal officials say the schools were publicly identified to increase transparency and spur a broader conversation on campus sex assaults.

OSU is the only school in Oklahoma on the list. OSU spokesman Gary Shutt says in a statement that the school is committed to providing the safest campus possible for students and others. He says OSU has strengthened its policies related to sexual abuse on campus following a system-wide review during the past year.
