Public comment period for Oklahoma’s new rules on talking about race in the classroom available through next week

Through next week, the general public will have a chance to comment on the state’s rules related to Oklahoma’s so-called Critical Race Theory ban.

An emergency rule created a process for the public to file grievances from the classroom in fall 2021.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is now looking at making those temporary rules permanent. There haven’t been many complaints so far, the department’s attorney Brad Clark said Thursday at a State Board of Education meeting.

“By the numbers, since September when those rules were made effective, through December we’ve had two complaints that have been filed,” Clark said.

The public has through Wednesday to make comments on the process. People can submit an email comment to the email address rules@sde.ok.gov.

There will be a public hearing about the rules on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m., at the Oliver Hodge Education Building in Oklahoma City.

The rules must be approved by the State Board of Education and then the Legislature or Governor before going into effect.
