KGOU Readers Club - Opal's Greenwood Oasis

KGOU

The KGOU Readers Club continues its look at the Tulsa Race Massacre as the 100th anniversary of the destruction of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street, approaches.

For decades after the events of Memorial Day 1921, Oklahoma students could go their entire educational experience without hearing about the Tulsa Race Massacre in school. That’s beginning to change as more and more people recognize the importance of teaching children about this shameful chapter of Oklahoma history. Opal’s Greenwood Oasis is a children’s book meant to introduce the history of Greenwood to the very young. Authors Quraysh Ali Lansana and Najah-Amatullah Hylton joined KGOU managing editor Logan Layden to discuss their book.

In part two of their conversation with KGOU, Lansana and Hylton talk about the historical aspects of Opal’s Greenwood Oasis, the unique illustrations in the book, and the progress in teaching young people about the Tulsa Race Massacre.
