Oklahoma state Sen. Connie Johnson says she's "temporarily relieved" after winning the Democratic nomination to face Republican U.S. Rep. James Lankford in the race for the U.S. Senate.

Johnson won Tuesday's primary runoff for a spot on the November ballot. Lankford won the GOP nomination in the June primary.

Johnson said Wednesday that she'll work to improve education and bring jobs to Oklahoma. She says she believes she can win, despite Oklahoma's reputation as a solidly Republican "red state."

Lankford did not to seek re-election to the U.S. House in order to run for the Senate when Sen. Tom Coburn announced plans to resign.

Lankford says he considers the race a long job interview and will work to balance the federal budget and on health care and immigration reform.
