Oklahoma GOP Chairman To Seek Re-Election, Faces Opposition

Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman Dave Weston

The chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party says he will seek re-election to the post.

Dave Weston said Wednesday he will again run for the state party's top leadership position.

"We are very proud of what we've accomplished in the last year and a half with quite a few firsts for our party," Weston said in an email. "With the confidence of our party faithful, I am committed to continuing our record of successes as Chairman into the 2016 election."

Republicans in November swept all federal and statewide races, expanded their majority in the state Senate and maintained the GOP majority in the state House.

The Oklahoma GOP is also preparing to host the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City in May.

A former Oklahoma state senator and one-time tea party favorite who ran unsuccessfully for governor and U.S. Senate is now setting his sights on the chairmanship of the state Republican Party.

Randy Brogdon of Owasso confirmed Wednesday he would seek the state party's top post at the GOP's state convention in April.

The 61-year-old Brogdon is a former Republican state senator who rode a tea party wave to nearly 40 percent of the vote in a GOP primary against Mary Fallin in 2010. He planned to run for governor against Fallin again this year, but instead ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate when Tom Coburn announced he was stepping down.
