The public would get to decide if the Oklahoma Legislature should dedicate every other year exclusively to writing a budget under a resolution that has cleared a Senate committee.
The Senate Rules Committee on Wednesday approved the measure that was written by Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman. It calls for a statewide vote on whether to allow the Legislature to draft a budget every year but only take up public policy measures on all other topics in odd-numbered years. A similar measure is pending in a House committee.
Bingman says the proposal would allow legislators to spend more time working on the budget without being distracted by various other pieces of legislation.
