Susan Rice, U.S. national security advisor, arrives to the P5+1 multilateral meeting at the Nuclear Security Summit on April 1, 2016.

Ambassador Susan Rice spent four years as National Security Advisor to President Barack Obama. Prior to that, she was the president’s choice to be Ambassador to the United Nations — the first African-American woman to hold the job. And she had previously worked on national security issues in the Clinton White House.

Now, she’s part of a group that’s trying to boost Democratic candidates’ expertise of foreign affairs.

Rice’s tenure has been historic, and it earned her no small amount of criticism from conservatives, including the president.

Rice spoke with Joshua Johnson at an event at American University, where she is a visiting research fellow.* You can watch that conversation here.

After we hear that conversation, we’ll sit down with a panel to discuss what we heard and the future of national security policy for the United States.
