Rain and abnormal cloud coverage leading to unfavorable drying conditions is delaying the wheat harvest in some parts of Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is one of the largest wheat producers in the nation. But the recent rain and colder weather is keeping soil wet longer, which slows down producer harvesting.
Mike Schulte is the Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. He says while the climate and temperatures have been different this year, he is hopeful for a good crop.
"I feel like the quality of the crop is still there based on the early indications of what we’re seeing, but if we now turn off and the wheat is fully ripened and we continue to get rain for the next week or so, certainly there’s going to be challenges for producers," said Schulte.
While the weather is unusual, Schulte says he has not seen problems affecting wheat quality such as grain sprouting.
