Madeleine Brand reports on a public education controversy in New Jersey. The state's high court recently ruled that there is a gross disparity between poor urban and rich suburban public schools. The state is trying to restore equity by cutting back the amount of money is spends on suburban schools. Urban school superintendants fear the money saved from the rich won't wind up in the hands of the poor.

Muslim societies are not usually associated with female mpowerment and feminist values, but women activists in Iran and other countries n the Middle East are gaining new-found respect and recognition throughout the egion. NPR's Jacki Lyden visited Iran and spoke to a variety of women about the rowth of the equality movement throughout their country, and learned how and hy these Muslim women are working toward positive re-interpretation of the oman's role in Islamic law and society.

2: Director BETTY THOMAS has directed a new movie, "The Brady Bunch." The film is straight from the TV series that ran from 1969-74, even down to the story line. But there is a twist. The innocent family is transported with all its 70's values and fashion into the 90's. THOMAS also directed "Only You" and "My Breast" She is also known for playing Sergeant Lucy Bates on the TV series "Hill Street Blues."

2: GESHE THUPTEN JINPA (GE-shee TOOP-ten JIN-pa), the principle translator for the Dalai Lama. THUPTEN JINPA was a refugee in India as a child, became a monk at a Tibetan monastery, and is now working on his Ph.D at Cambridge University. He is the translator, editor and annotator of The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, written by the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

Jacki speaks with Oscar Newman, an architect and city planner at the institute for community design analysis in New York, about "defensible spaces." They're an approach to revitalizing inner city spaces by closing off neighborhoods with gates that, in effect, turn neighborhood streets into cul-de-sacs. Newman says defensible spaces have been tried in several cities with good results: they give residents a more personal and intimiate connection to their neighborhoods, which translates into safer and more vibrant living spaces.
