This winter has been deemed a disaster by many snow-lovers n the Northeast United States, and the skiers, the ski slopes, the ki-wear and equipment merchants are suffering the effects. David right of member station WBUR in Boston reports on how skiers and the ki industry are trying to combat the disappointing lack of white.
Hiroshima Maidens
Sarah Shapiro is an American writer who recently described her recollections as a 5-year old member of the Hiroshima Maidens, a group of 25 young Japanese women who were brought to the United States for medical treatment following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. NPR's Susan Stamberg reports.
. Distant Galaxy
NPR's Joe Palca reports that astronomers have seen the oldest alaxy ever discovered. It's called "8C 14-35," and astronomers estimate it to e 15-billion light years away, and 150 to 200-thousand light years wide. James raham and his colleagues at the University of California/Berkeley saw the alaxy through an infrared telescope at Mauna Kea (MAHN-uh KAY-uh), Hawaii. They eport their findings in the current isssue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Daniel talks with author Jayne Anne Phillips about her latest novel "Shelter," which takes place at a summer camp in West Virginia. Phillips writes vividly and poetically about the experiences of adolescent girls at the camp ... a place of seeming innocence but one in which passion, danger and perversity all emerge to change their young lives forever.

NPR's Joanne Silberner reports on the future of Medicare, he health insurance system that caters specifically to elderly and disabled mericans. With the Republican promise to balance the budget on the 1995 ongressional docket, some advocates for seniors are beginning to wonder when nd if cuts will be directed at Medicare funds.
