NPR's Peter Kenyon reports that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has unexpectedly freed two Americans who had been jailed in Iraq. The men, William Barloon and David Daliberti, were arrested and sentenced to 8 years in prison after they entered Iraq from Kuwait by mistake last March. The Americans were freed after US Congressman Bill Richardson (of New Mexico) met with Saddam.

Daniel talks with Gary Millhollin (mil-HAHL-in) director of the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control. Today is the 50th anniversary of first atomic test. Millhollin says there is a greater chance that nuclear weapons would be used today than at any time during the Cold War.

Host Liane Hansen speaks with astronauts and osmonauts aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which linked up with the Mir meer) space station last Thursday. The crew, which is currently conducting oint science experiments, will continue in orbit for several more days before eturning to the earth.

Daniel talks to Aryan the head of the International Red Cross delegation in Tuzla. She describes the scene after the devastating mortar attack on Thursday. The shell fell in a square filled with young people enjoying a summer night, and she says that many of the young people in Tuzla are still in shock from the loss of friends.

A 'Fresh Air' concert with NICK LOWE. His newest recording is "The Impossible Bird" (Upstart Records). 1994 revives Lowe's solo career. Lowe in the early 1970s played London's pub rock scene in the band Brinsley Schwarz. After the band broke up in 1975, he produced five albums for Elvis Costello. Lowe worked with Dave Edmundsin and the group Rockpile. In 1992 he was one quarter of the band "Little Village" with John Hiatt and Ry Cooder.
