The suspended federal budget talks have reached at least one conclusion. Both sides will base their offers on assumptions about future economic trends as projected by the Congressional Budget Office. The director of the CBO, June O'Neill, came in as a Republican appointee, but NPR's Peter Kenyon says she has maintained the office's reputation for non-partisan forecasts.

From northern Bosnia, NPR's Martha Raddatz reports from one of the United States Army base camps. This camp and others like it will be home for the 20-thousand U.S. soldiers who are part of the NATO implementation force. They'll be responsible for patrolling the 200-mile long border between the Muslim-Croat Federation and the Bosnian Serbs.

Broadway singer JOHN RAITT
2: Broadway singer JOHN RAITT. He's the father of singer Bonnie Raitt. The two have collaborated on a new album of show tunes, "The Broadway Legend," (Angel). RAITT made his Broadway debut as Billy Bigelow in the original production of "Carousel." He also was in the original Broadway cast and film of "The Pajama Game." He's performed in many other musicals including "Oklahoma," and "South Pacific."

Chinese orphans are placed in horrendous conditions, eading the majority of them to die of starvation and medical neglect. NPR's ary Kay Magistad reports on a study by Human Rights Watch/Asia, a U.S.-based onitoring group, which finds that the Chinese government singled out children or starvation in order to stabilize orphange populations.
