Guenivere Garcia is on death row in Chicago for the 1991 murder of her second husband. She is scheduled to die by lethal injection on January 17th. She has dropped all appeals and says she wants the state to end her life without delay. Garcia has endured sexual and physical abuse throughout her life. NPR's Edward Lifson reports that a number of groups opposing her execution say the state would merely be assisting in Garcia's suicide, while others say if Garcia wants to die, the state should grant her wish.

Danny goes to the National Zoo here in Washington to examine efforts to teach orangutans how to communicate with humans. The zoo has developed an exhibit called "The Think Tank". We meet with Rob Shumaker, one of the key researchers at The Think Tank who shows us how he's teaching the orangutans a new, specially developed language of symbols. The hope, Shumaker says, is that one day the orangs will learn enough of this symbolic language that communication between humans and primates would be possible, at least on a limited basis.

For almost 15 years he has been a surgeon in war torn parts of the world in Burundi, Somalia, and in a Palestinian Refugee Camp. As such he has seen the devastation on human beings from landmines GIANNOU is currently leading the Red Cross's campaign for a ban on anti-personnel landmines worldwide, which kill or injure hundreds of civilians each week.
