Cheryl Corley Reports That Illinois Governor Jim Edgar
has joined a Chicago suburb in opposing a lawsuit which contends that private contractors who work for the government should have the same protection from political hiring and firing as do many public employees. He's asking the Supreme Court to reverse a 1990 ruling that declared the state's political patronage system unconstitutional.

Brian Naylor Reports Bob Dole's Loss
in the New Hampshire primary to conservative commentator Pat Buchanan raises concerns about his candidacy. Supporters say the loss should serve as a wake-up call to the Republican party.
Welsh Lite Crude
NPR's Michael Goldfarb reports from London on attempts to refloat an oil tanker that ran aground off the coast of Wales. The tanker Sea Empress has spilled as estimated 19 million gallons of oil. The oil is in a 12-mile long slick that is drifting out to sea.
Dole In Dakotas
Noah speaks with NPR's political correspondent Elizabeth Arnold, who has been been traveling with the Dole campaign. After his disappointing second place finish in New Hampshire Tuesday, Arnold says Dole will have to get tough to stop conservative rival Pat Buchanan from embarrassing him in upcoming primaries.
Candidates' Money
NPR's Peter Overby reports that following the New Hampshire primary, almost all of the Republican presidential candidates have money problems. Steve Forbes is planning to spend even more, but Pat Buchanan and Lamar Alexander are running low. Bob Dole has plenty in the bank, but is coming up fast on the spending limit for publicly-subsidized candidates.
Tovia Smith Reports From The Dedham, Massachusetts Murder Trial
of John Salvi, the man accused of killing two women's health clinic receptionists at point-blank range last year. The prosecution, in its opening statement yesterday, summarized the charges, while defense lawyers painted Salvi as a paranoid schizophrenic not responsible for his actions.
