While acts of terrorism like the bombing in Oklahoma City arely occur on American soil, other countries around the globe have been orced to deal with extreme acts of violence throughout their past and current istories. Host Liane Hansen speaks with Conor O'Cleary, the Washington orrespondent for the Irish Times newspaper, about what it's like to live in an nvironment rife with the fear of urban terrorism.
Dole
Linda conducts our weekly political roundtable chat. This week, the topic is Bob Dole and defining the GOP vision. Linda is joined by NPR's political correspondent Elizabeth Arnold, who's been out on the campaign trail with Dole, and Mark Nuttle, a Republican political consultant in Norman, Oklahoma. Nuttle ran Pat Robertson presidential campaign in 1988. He also has advised Ronald Reagan, George Bush and most recently, Steve Forbes.
Human Clinical Trials Suspended
Host Bob Edwards talks to Bioethicist Arthur Caplan about the suspension of all federally funded clinical trials involving humans at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa. The government said researchers at the medical college and a university oversight board, repeatedly violated federal regulations and endangered patients in a cancer study. Arthur Caplan is Director of the Center of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Storm
Mary Jo Draper from member station KCUR in Kansas City, Missouri, reports on a severe winter storm that tore across the Plains and parts of the Southwest yesterday and today. Several states including Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma were frozen by sleet, snow and wind. In parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, high-winds have blown the snow into huge drifts, shutting down highways and in some places keeping snow plows off the roads.
OKC Bombing Trial
The victims of the Oklahoma bombing last year are eager to attend the trials of the two men accused of the crime. But the judge, citing federal rules of evidence, has barred them from attending because they may be witnesses in the sentencing phase of the trial. The victims and their families have filed suit to overturn the judge's ruling. NPR's Mark Roberts reports.
