Gm Strike
Last night the week-long Canadian Auto Workers strike against General Motors spread to every G-M plant in Canada. N-P-R's Don Gonyea reports that because the world's largest automaker stockpiled parts normally produced in the Canadian factories, analysts expect that US assembly plants won't be seriously affected until next week at the earliest.

Last night at the Democratic Convention, the Broadway cast of "Rent" performed the song "Seasons of Love." We'll hear some of that performance.

a forum for Catholics to discuss their differences with Rome within the Church. Since it's creation, the project has been criticized by both conservative and liberal Catholics.

Soup Kitchens Bad For Biz
Veta Christy reports that Hartford, Connecticut has approved an ordinance that severely restricts the number of shelters, soup kitchens and other such services within the city...arguing they attract the poor. That claim is disputed by welfare workers. About 30 cities have similar laws, but none is as far-reaching as Hartford's.

Civil Rights activist ANDREW YOUNG talks with Terry Gross about his new book "An Easy Burden: The Civil Rights Movement and the Transformation of America." It is published by Harper Collins. Young served as Executive Director of Southern Christian Leadership Conference where he worked with Martin Luther King Jr. In 1972, he was elected to Congress. In 1977, President Carter named Young as Ambassador to the United Nations. In addition, he served two terms as the Mayor of Atlanta.
Bughouse Square
A sound installation by Polish-born artist Miroslaw Rogala in Chicago's Washington Square Park that takes viewers/participants back to the days when the park was called Bughouse Square...for the constant cacophony from soapbox preachers and politicians. The installation is interactive...visitors trigger light sensors that, in turn, trigger different speeches from different eras, and the mix of chatter depends on how the visitor moves through the installation. It's all about the importance of free speech. Rick Karr reports from Chicago.

Monday's benediction at the Democratic National Convention was delivered by the Rev. Dr. Vashti [VAH-shtee] McKenzie, pastor of the Paine Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Zak Forrest Productions
- Daniel visits 15-year-old Zak Forrest, who just won the grand prize in a nationwide American Film Institute contest with his two-and-a-half minute film called "Saturday." Zak shot the film himself and did all the editing on his computer. TV and movie actor Tim Allen was one of the judges in the contest...Danny talks with him about the film, and about the advances in technology that make filmmaking accessible to more people.
