LITHGOW is a two-time former Oscar nominee and has recently earned an Emmy nomination for his role in the show. A spokesman for the Cancer Research Center says Sagan died from pneumonia after suffering from bone marrow disease for two years. Sagan won the Pulitzer in 1978 for his book "Dragons of Eden" and was the author of several other best-selling books on space and the universe including: "Intelligent Life in the Universe," "Mars and the Mind of Man," "Other Worlds." He was a professor at Cornell University, the Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies, and a pioneer in the field of exobiology, the branch of biology investigating the possibility of extraterrestrial life. In 1980, his PBS show "Cosmos" became the most-watched limited series in the history of American public television.

NPR'S Linda Gradstein reports that every Jewish eighteen-year-old is drafted in the military in Israel, but enthusiasm for service seems to be waning. In a nation where youths have traditionally vied to be in the elite combat units, many believe what is happening reflects changes in Israeli society at large.

That means that they and their partners are often hit by AIDS unaware. But age confers no special protection against the disease. NPR's Chris Arnold reports that millions of Americans turned to the Internet to get their news on election night. CNN said its web site was getting 5 million "hits" an hour last night as people searched results on specific races rather than waiting for network coverage.

SIMON wrote the book "Road Show" about the 1988 presidential election. He's currently working on a book about this year's campaign which will be out next year.

NPR's Mike Shuster reports that the United States is alarmed at the escalating fighting in the West Bank and Gaza and is calling on all sides in the clashes not to take "unduly provocative action." US officials are surprised at the speed and level of the violence and are afraid it is endangering the Middle East peace process that they thought was slowly moving ahead.
