NPR's David Welna reports from the Cuban capital, Havana, n signs that communist leader Fidel Castro may be normalizing relations with he Catholic church. Hopes have been raised ever since Castro invited Pope John aul the Second to visit Cuba during their first face to face visit last month n Rome.
Tobacco Wars
Daniel talks with NPR science correspondent Richard Harris about the crackdown this past year on tobacco companies. For the first time, strict federal restrictions have been placed on tobacco ads that might be seen by children, and several states are suing tobacco companies for damages incurred by providing healthcare to people suffering from tobacco-related illnesses.
Oil Spills
A sunken World War II-era tanker that may be loaded with more than 3 million gallons of oil was recently discovered on the edge of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. A spill from the tankers' rotting holds could do all kinds of damage. The Coast Guard says the best thing to do is leave the tanker alone. NPR's John Nielsen explains why. The tanker Montebello was sunk 55 years ago today by a Japanese submarine.

Xmas Pantomime
In Hong Kong, a community theatre group transforms the British tradition of the Christmas pantomime -- a satirical musical comedy -- into a slapstick critique of the colony's politics. NPR's Mary Kay Magistad reports on this year's performance, the last before China takes over. Chinese control of the island may bring a less permissive atmosphere. Will the pantomime of the future have the same sharp bite as today's?

Novelist SIGRID NUNEZ
2: Novelist SIGRID NUNEZ. Her debut autobiographical novel was "A Feather on the Breath of God," (HarperPerennial). NUNEZ's newest novel is "Naked Sleeper." (HarperCollins). One reviewer calls it "a fine novel of maturing at 40." Another writes: "a steady, superbly insightful study of a life as quietly complex as the reader's own."

NPR's Michael Goldfarb in London reports on new facts emerging from inspectors who are looking at the damage in the train tunnel underneath the English Channel between Britain and France. Monday night, a freight train caught fire. There were no serious injuries to passengers or crew, but the tunnel has been shut down. Questions yet to be answered concern safety for future train transport, and how the shut-down will affect the financial future of the Chunnel.
