The characters in the film represent, what Lee says, are all aspects of the Black community. He says it's not what you would usually see in a Hollywood film. Also, the film was financed by donations from 15 Black men. Lee turned down money offers from big studios and when the film was done, he sold the film to Columbia for a profit.
