Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have been decreasing steadily, especially since North and South Korean leaders met in June for their first summit. U.S. officials say if the talks today and tomorrow produce progress on issues such as North Korea's missile program, President Clinton could visit North Korea before he leaves office.

His first book, The Meadowlands (now in paperback) an urban adventure in the wilds of the marshy dumping area between New Jersey and New York was praised for its wit, imagination and intelligence. His new book A Whale Hunt (Scribner) chronicles the two years he spent watching the Makah Indian tribe in Washington state as they prepared for and attempted their first whale hunt in over 70 years. But they didnt do it alone: they were surrounded by angry protestors and hounded by the press.

A type of genetically modified corn called "StarLink," which has not been approved for human use, has found its way into human food supplies in Iowa. Noah talks to Steve Dinnen, a business reporter and columnist for the Des Moines Register, about the hunt for "StarLink," to make sure it doesn't get used in food for people. Star Link has been approved for animal and industrial use, but has some characteristics common among human allergens. FDA regulations do not allow it to be tested on human subjects.

NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen have been battling on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Israel says it will seal off the village of Beit Jala from where Palestinians have repeatedly opened fire on a nearby Jewish neighborhood.

He laid out his agenda to continue the nation's current prosperity in a formal address today at Columbia University, and again in a series of interviews with Regis Philbin and Rosie O'Donnell to be broadcast tomorrow. NPR's Mike Shuster in Jerusalem reports the outburst of violence in the West Bank and Gaza over the past few weeks has shocked many people. It came just two months after the Camp David summit talks where Israel and the Palestinians seemed closer than ever before to a final peace settlement. At Camp David, the fate of Jerusalem's holy places was on the table for the first time in the negotiations. The issue proved traumatic, and a catalyst for violence.
