Bush - Schroeder
NPR's Don Gonyea reports from the White House on today's visit by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The German leader told reporters he and President Bush agree on "practically everything," except on the U.S. decision to reject the 1997 Kyoto treaty on global warming.
Foot and Mouth Vaccine
There are vaccines for the various strains of the virus that causes foot-and mouth-disease. And Britain now has permission from the European Union to use the vaccine. Health officials are debating what to do. NPR's Richard Harris looks at the strategies for making the most of a poor solution.
Changing Face of America: Postville, Iowa
A decade ago a group of Hasidic Jews moved to the small town of Postville, Iowa. Stephen Bloom wrote a book about it. Postville: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America was published last fall. Today he tells the story of how the town has changed since the Hasids arrived. The two cultures have largely remained separate. But one of the Hasidic men has been appointed to the city council. A petition was circulated in reaction, and next month there will be an election to decide if that man, Aaron Goldsmith, stays or goes. Some non-Jews in the town feel strongly that the Hasim haven't done enough to become part of the community.
Big Fish
Noah Adams talks with John Bolbos, who just won more than $7,000 for the king salmon he caught during the Winter King Salmon Tournament in Homer, Alaska. At more than 40 pounds, it's the biggest fish ever caught in the tournament.
Macedonia - Kosovo
At least two people -- including an AP television producer -- were killed today when fighting between Macedonian security forces and ethnic Albanian guerrillas spilled over the border into Kosovo. NPR's Guy Raz reports from Skopje, the Macedonian capital.
Delphi Jobs
Jerome Vaughn of member station WDET in Detroit reports auto-parts maker Delphi announced a major restructuring today. The company will close nine plants and eliminate about 11,500 jobs.
Testing Backlash
NPR's Claudio Sanchez reports on vocal -- and organized -- groups of suburban parents who in some states are mobilizing against calls for more standardized testing of students.
Crackdown on Trade in Stolen Italian Antiquities
NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports that under an agreement signed recently by the United States and Italy, American art dealers and collectors must now prove that Italian antiquities they import have not been looted or stolen. Archeologists say stolen Italian artifacts have been supplying the art market for more than two centuries. Italian investigators have tracked down ancient Greek treasures looted from Morgantina, in central Sicily, to Manhattan and they are negotiating for their return.
Making Campaign Donations
Robert Siegel talks with David Jones, a Democratic fundraiser about how political contributors can use their money now, and how that would change under the proposed reforms.
Boeing Jets
NPR's Wendy Kaufman talks to Noah Adams about Boeing's major announcements this afternoon. Boeing unveiled plans for a brand new airplane. It is intended to fly higher and faster than any passenger jet other than the Concord. And the company has decided not to compete with German rival Airbus in the construction of a new super-size passenger jet.
Doves to Hawks
Robert Siegel talks with Amnon Rubinstein, an Israeli member of parliament for the left-wing Meretz Party. They talk about why there's been little Israeli protest -- even from peace advocates -- against the military strikes on Palestinian targets.
China Holds Alleged American Spy
Host Renee Montagne talks with NPR's Rob Gifford in Beijing. The Chinese government is holding another person they accuse of spying for the U.S. government, and this person is an American citizen.
