Westbrook Out, Bruised Chest May Bench Lin in Game 3

Elizabeth Gwartney

UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and be out indefinitely.

The Thunder announced the injury Friday.

Westbrook was hurt in Game 2 of the Thunder's playoff series against Houston on Wednesday night. Rookie Patrick Beverley lunged into him trying for a steal in the second quarter and his hip collided with Westbrook's knee.

Westbrook has never previously missed a game in his four NBA seasons.

The Houston Rockets say an MRI confirmed Thursday that Jeremy Lin has a bruised chest, leaving his status is day-to-day leading up to Game 3 against Oklahoma City on Saturday night.

Lin was sidelined for the second half of the Rockets' 105-102 playoff loss in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night because of the injury.

Coach Kevin McHale says Lin "is a tough kid, so for him not to play, especially in a big game like that, it had to really be bothering him quite a bit."

For the Thunder, All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook did not participate in drill work during the final portion of practice Thursday that was open to the media. Coach Scott Brooks then said Westbrook, who has never missed a game in his NBA career, will be fine for Game 3.
