Forecasters from the National Weather Service in Norman say dangerous heat will grip much of the state for the next few days. Parts of north-central and northeastern Oklahoma – including the metro areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa - are in an excessive heat warning until 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Temperatures in the upper 90s are expected, with afternoon heat index values between 110 and 115. The entire state, except the Oklahoma Panhandle and far western counties bordering the Texas Panhandle, is under a heat advisory.
The National Weather Service urge people to take extra precautions during period of high heat, especially for those who work or spend time outside. Strenuous outdoor activities should be scheduled in the cooler morning or evening hours. Anybody who spends any time outdoors should drink plenty of water and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
The Emergency Management Services Authority issued a heat alert in the Oklahoma City area on Wednesday. The Oklahoman reports EMSA took 10 heat-related calls on Wednesday.
