A Symphony, Classic Stories And A Photo Exhibit Fill This Week's OneSix8

TCU School of Music

The University of Central Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra performs alongside talented guest musicians Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Hall Theater.

The concert features pianist Sallie Pollack, D.M.A., performing Chopin’s “E Minor Piano Concerto” with guest conductor John Giordano, chairman of the jury for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Ralph Morris, conductor of the UCO Symphony Orchestra, says the concert is an excellent learning opportunity for his students.

“Central students will learn so much by working with John as well as performing alongside Dr. Pollack, who is an excellent soloist in her own right and whose talents are sure to be highlighted in the Chopin piece,” Morris said.

The performance also includes music by Howard Hanson and Mozart.

The Oklahoma City University School of Theatre opens “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” Thursday, December 4 at the Burg Theatre.

This adaptation of the American holiday classic film is presented as a 1940s radio broadcast, using sound effects, commercial breaks and a small ensemble cast to tell the story of George Bailey and the town of Bedford Falls.

Thursday’s opening begins at 8 p.m. Additional showings take place through the following week.

Another show opening this weekend is Sooner Theatre’s“Meet Me in St. Louis,” opening Friday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The musical follows the Smith family’s journey to the 1904 World’s Fair, and the adventures and mishaps they encounter along the way. Like the 1944 classic movie it’s based on, the stage adaptation includes memorable musical numbers like “Raving Beauty,” “The Boy Next Door” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”

Performances run through Sunday, December 14.

A photo exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of Oklahoma City’s settlement opens Friday, December 5 in the OKC Underground.

“OKC125” is a public exhibition of 125 photos of downtown Oklahoma City by 125 local artists. They were given disposable cameras and 125 minutes to photograph downtown. One photo was chosen from each artist for display in the exhibition.

Romy Owens, the curator of the exhibit, hopes the project creates more artistic opportunities in Oklahoma City.

“I’m trying to lead by example with this collaborative exhibition that will hopefully introduce people to a unique piece of our city,” she said.

The exhibition is available for free to the public until February 7.
