Oklahoma officials say the number of students enrolling in the Oklahoma Promise scholarship program continues to decline.
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education expect 18,300 students to enroll in the program during the 2014-2015 school year. According to The Oklahoman, that's a 5.2 decrease from the current year's enrollment.
Officials say the decline is caused by a shrinking number of students who meet the income requirements. Under the current system, students in the eighth, ninth and 10th grade must show that their parents earn $50,000 or less annually to qualify.
The program requires students to take certain high school courses to be eligible. The scholarship covers the tuition at public two-year and four-year schools in Oklahoma or a portion of tuition at private colleges and universities in Oklahoma.
