The 20th annual Norman Mardi Gras Parade hits Main Street Saturday, March 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This year’s theme, “Come Together! Que l’on se Rassemble”, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ arrival in the United States.
The parade includes floats, costumes and typical parade attractions along with live music by the Zydeco All-Stars, Da’Gumboman and Boyd Street Brass. Additionally, Big Truck Tacos and Mariposa Coffee set up camp on Peters Avenue for hungry attendees.
Masks and costumes are highly encouraged as the parade migrates to the Performing Arts Studio’s Norman Depot for an awards ceremony at 9 p.m. Prize categories include best march, best dance, best family and several more for parade-goers with Mardi Gras spirit.
Coinciding with the parade, Jazz in June hosts its annual Meet Me on Bourbon Street Fundraising Reception. Special Guest Bart Conner, former U.S. gymnast and gold medalist at the 1984 Summer Olympics, reveals Jazz in June’s 2014 lineup alongside live music from the Boyd Street Brass.
The ticketed event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Shevaun Williams and Associates on East Main Street in full view of the parade.
Because Main Street is blocked off for the festivities, spectator parking is recommended one block north of Main on Gray Street between Peters Avenue and Crawford Street.
Also taking place Saturday March 1st, The University of Oklahoma's College of Dentistry offers complimentary dental care for children between the ages of 4 and 12. The dental work is provided by students under the supervision of trained dentists for the college’s annual Kids’ Day.
The event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the College of Dentistry of OU’s Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City University’s School of Music hosts the Grammy Award winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet March 2nd at 3 p.m. The concert marks the season finale of this year’s OCU Distinguished Artists Series.
The quartet performs in the Bass School of Music’s Petree Recital Hall on OCU’s campus.
The second annual Native Crossroads Film Festival and Symposium runs Thursday, February 27 through March 1st at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. The event explores the link between land and indigenous cultural identity.
Several feature films, short films and panel discussions investigate native cultural concerns that focus on land. The event pairs short film screenings with roundtable discussions to inspire conversations among filmmakers, scholars from across OU's campus community and tribal organization representatives, writers, and performers.
