At least three House Republicans are trying to line up support from their GOP colleagues to become the next leader of the House in case current Speaker T.W. Shannon steps down.
Reps. Jeff Hickman of Dacoma, Mike Jackson of Enid, and Jason Nelson of Oklahoma City all confirmed Wednesday they are interested in seeking the House's top spot should Shannon resign.
Shannon announced Wednesday that he is running for the U.S. Senate.
In a letter to House Republicans, Shannon said he has no immediate plans to step down, but said he planned to work with the caucus "to determine the appropriate timing and nature of the transition."
The speaker appoints committee chairs, oversees House operations and negotiates with the Senate and governor's office on the budget and key policy issues.
