Tobacco-Free Schools Bill Passes Senate Committee

An Oklahoma Senate committee has approved legislation to prohibit the use of all tobacco products in public schools and make them tobacco free.

The Senate Committee on Education voted 13-0 Monday for the bill that has already passed the state House. A similar bill previously passed by the Senate is pending in the House.

Oklahoma law already requires that public schools be tobacco-free during the school day. The bill by Republican Sen. James Halligan of Stillwater would extend that policy to include non-school hours as well as school vehicles and school-sponsored activities.

The bill bans the use of tobacco in any form, by anyone, at any place and any time while on school grounds and during any school sponsored functions held off campus.
