OKC Thunder Announces Voting Initiative

Sep 2, 2020

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced a new initiative this week called Thunder Vote, which aims to ensure all eligible Oklahoma citizens are registered to vote, educated on candidates and issues and prepared to cast their ballots.

The Thunder will hold voter registration drives inside Chesapeake Energy Arena every Saturday from Sept. 12 - Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. ahead of the Oct. 9 registration deadline.

These events will provide citizens with access to computers, printers, postage-paid envelopes and the opportunity to apply for an absentee ballot.

The Thunder corporate offices at the arena will also have voter registration and other voting information available during regular business hours beginning Sept. 14.

After the NBA player’s strike last week, the NBA and the NBPA agreed on a series of commitments to support social justice and racial equality, including using team arenas for voting purposes.

The Thunder Vote initiative also includes spreading the register and vote message into neighborhoods in the community and through the Thunder’s social media, digital and broadcast platforms.
